As A Therapist

Hello and welcome! I'm Shanty - owner, therapist, and wellness educator. With over a dozen years of experience and having helped thousands of clients improve their lives, I am here to help you reclaim your life! I am your listening ear, sounding board, teacher, guide, and teammate. Clients know me as the most authentic, real, relatable, down to earth, and comfortable therapist they have ever had. I'm also know to challenge clients some to help them do the deep, digging work necessary to grow. But, you are not alone. I will walk with you, every step of the way. And together, we will get you unstuck, reduce and heal the distress that brings you to therapy and also empower and strengthen your life-balance and well-being, so you can gain satisfaction in and control over your life.

My Background

As a licensed professional counselor I hold certifications in supervision, addictions, trauma, and grief. I have degrees in both psychology and criminal justice and did my Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology in Oregon. But soon after, I moved back to the Lansing, Michigan area. While in Oregon, I interned as a domestic violence and crisis counselor and did a lot of work with anxiety, PTSD, and more. Back in Michigan, I spent most of the last 12 years working in substance abuse and mental health in both residential and outpatient programs and was even a clinical supervisor for over 5 years, training other clinicians and overseeing their work. Now, I split my time between my practice and as an agency therapist running groups and doing substance abuse evaluations.

Outside of Therapy

Outside of therapy, I have a wonderful rescue dog (Lucy) that was adopted about 9 1/2 years ago. She has the sassiest, smartest, and most smart-mouthed personality that you have ever met,and I love her, and all her quirks, to absolute pieces. Outside of that, I am your normal, everyday woman. I spend a lot of time with my aging parents, and have a love of the outdoors and nature, cheesecake, books, trivia, sports, cars, plants, essential oils, photography, and random/epic road trips and adventures. My adventures have literally taken me coast to coast from Oregon's shores for grad school, to the farthest eastern spot in the USA in Maine for fall colors, into Canada just because, and up to Michigan's peak in Copper Harbor as I love the peace and quiet there.

When life gets hard, it can become difficult to cope the way we would like, and even more difficult to enjoy the life we have. Sometimes, we just need to sit with someone and be heard, and other times we need to clear out the emotional closet of gunk and redirect, and even other times we need to learn new skills or process. Because I know that you are worthy of better things than the struggles that you are currently dealing with and I am here to help you get there.

The Work

I know that change and growth can be difficult. I mean, if it were easy you wouldn't need help and you would have probably already done it by now. So, I try to make it as easy and simple as possible. While you have to make the changes, I will be here for you through the process, helping clear the path and support you along the way.

How I Help

I put top priority on our therapeutic relationship. I mean, for you to do the work, we must connect or it falls flat. Thus, I believe in being your general equal, not your superior. My office is a place for you to be at ease and comfortable, if not cozy. I want it to feel more like spending time with a confidant than cold, traditional therapy.
